Stressed out
Performance / Performancetext
2006
We see lips in a close-up; hear a female voice make statements about the hectic life of a woman in the 21st century, delivered in a staccato tone. The female here serves merely as a placeholder, as a projection screen. Listening to the text, the viewer feels compelled to connect and relate the narrator’s experiences to those in his or her own life.
Stressed out is based on the 1972 performance Waiting by feminist artist Faith Wilding. In it, Wilding condenses a woman’s entire life into a monologue that describes a monotonous “waiting” for her own, i.e. individually lived life to begin. Articulated in the work are Cibulka’s artistic methods of adaptation, translation and reinterpretation; for Stressed out, the artist appropriates the formal structure of Faith Wilding’s Waiting while reversing a key aspect of its content.
